Last year, through our studies at Anglia Ruskin, we were given the opportunity to create a commissioned short animation for Majico. In a meeting with Mike Coto we discussed the intended purpose of their water purifier, its design, its use in Tanzania and how we as animators could best portray this purifier in animated form. With his help, we brainstormed possible approaches and various visual cues to be used in the animation. Mike was very helpful in providing us with the information we needed in order to portray the water purifier accurately. Using this information we could then outline a rough script and storyline, which explains the workings, design and the potential effect the water purifier can have on communities in developing countries such as Tanzania.

Over the course of a couple of weeks, we relied heavily on the pictures, videos and feedback provided by the Majico team in order to get a feel for the overall visual look of the animation. The concept art and character design are based on their existing promotional material. The overall informative storyline and animated style were influenced by other animated series such Crash Course and Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell. After presenting our designs and a rough animated storyline to Mike, Peter Knight and Serena Belluschi and getting excellent feedback and constructive criticism from them we were able to make some small adjustments and start animating. During the animation process, we made sure to keep in contact with the Majico team for any minor changes that still needed to be addressed, while bringing our original rough idea to a final outcome. We focused on keeping the animation as clear and informative as possible, using subtle movements to underline the functions and advantages of the purifier. The Majico team also provided us with some informative text to be shown on-screen alongside the animated movement for added clarification.

It was an incredible experience to be part of such a great project that can definitely change thousands of lives for the best and be able to be an asset to the Majico group.
